Colourful autumn in the Dolomites, UNESCO World Natural Heritage

In autumn in South Tyrol you will have the opportunity to experience the gastronomic tradition of "Törggelen"

Before taking his leave, the summer of Castelrotto dresses up in his most beautiful dress, offering the eye of his visitor a beautiful spectacle of autumn colors. Looking down towards the Valle d’ Isarco, one can spot the leaves of the trees and vineyards coloured red and yellow. When looking up, the larches start to turn yellow and lose their needles and on the top the peaks of the Sciliar and the Dolomites start to be covered in white by the first snow. And all this while in the kitchens of the farmhouses the families start preparing the autumn specialties for the traditional "Törggelen"…

Guided hike

Four times a week our private & free hiking guide Victor shows our guest the best peaks and meadows in the Dolomites.

Mountain biking and cycling

Biking and cycling are also popular fall activities in the Salten-Schlern area of Castelrotto. The Alpe di Siusi offers great trails for mountainbikers and road bikers in this time of the year surrounded by breath-taking autumn scenery. The summits of the UNESCO heritage Dolomites begin to dress white, while lower-lying forests and meadows take on the typical autumn colours.

In June, the Sellaronda Bike Day will also take place, where the four passes around the Sella mountain will be closed to traffic and reserved for cyclists of all disciplines.

Running and jogging

Also in fall the town of Castelrotto and the Alpe di Siusi mountain plateau are a paradise for hikers and mountaineers. Trails and paths of varying levels offer a great way to enjoy the wonderful colouring of the alpine meadows and forests surrounded by the majestic Dolomite peaks.

Particularly popular are the “Oachener Höfeweg” trail, an easy hiking trail passing by traditional farm houses, pastures and meadows, starting from Prösels Castle. Another great hike is the one from Kastelruth to the Tschötscherhof farm museum in St. Oswald near Siusi. Along the road there are countless typical farm houses to enjoy traditional local dishes and the culinary Törggelen delights.

Golfing

The alpine golf course of Castelrotto (St. Vigil) is a 18-hole, Par 69 and covers an area of 60 hectares.

From each of the 18 holes you can enjoy a beautiful landscape and astonishing views of the south Tyrolean landscape! The course is open from March to November and offers interesting tournaments, thanks to its favourable position and excellent climatic conditions.

Our Hotel Villa Kastelruth is an official partner of the golf club St. Vigil and we offer our guests interesting benefits and discounts!

Törggelen: Eating today, as then

"Törggelen" is an ancient autumnal South Tyrolean custom in which, between September and November, the farmers begin to make their own wine and invite neighbours and friends to come and taste it.

Groups of friends thus go from farm to farm, sit down together in the farmhouses cosy parlour and taste hearty dishes along with the delicious wine.

The farmer will provide his locally grown and produced dishes (like cheese, sausage, bacon, sauerkraut, barley soup, etc.) and the young wine. Every autumn this popular tradition attracts many visitors, aiming to spend wonderful Törggelen evenings in homey taverns and rustic inns.

"Kastelruther Spatzen"

The “Kastelruther Spatzen” is South Tyrol’s most famous musical group. They have won many honours and awards for their German “Schlager-Musik”, a traditional folk music style. As their name suggests, the group’s seven members, including lead singer Norbert Rier, all come from the town of Kastelruth and surroundings.

Three major concerts are held by the band every year in Castelrotto: The open air concert in June; the world famous "Kastelruther Spatzen Fest" in October (which attracts more than 50.000 visitors yearly) and the Christmas concert at the Christmas market in December.

Burning Dolomites

In autumn the low sunsets create a spectacular red light, which gives the pale Dolomite rocks the impression as if they were burning. From the Alpe di Siusi, this phenomenon can be seen particularly well given the great views on the Sassolungo and Sella mountains.
In late September and October our hiking guide organizes special sunset hikes to witness this natural spectacle called "Burning Dolomites".
